BAYOU CORNE (AP) — The huge sinkhole in Assumption Parish has swallowed more trees.

Parish emergency preparedness director John Boudreaux tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/17jmQpu) that the incident overnight Friday consumed about a dozen trees and a patch of land about 50 feet by 75 feet.

He says the area is on the north side of the sinkhole between the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities, including Texas Brine Co.’s only remaining work pad.

The sinkhole covers 25 acres.

Boudreaux says the parish had been warned about seismic activity on Friday.

The sinkhole has been growing since early August. Scientists suspect it was caused by failure months earlier of a salt dome cavern.
