Friday’s Games
Barbe 42, Sulphur 21
No records were safe at Bucs Stadium Friday night as Barbe torched arch-nemesis Sulphur.
Not only did the Bucs (7-2, 4-2) set a personal milestone for most consecutive victories over the Tors in Southwest Louisiana’s biggest rivalry, but Kennon Fontenot and Trey Quinn broke individual landmarks along the way.
The win, Barbe’s second since losing to New Iberia on the road two weeks ago, solidified their position for the playoffs, but they have one more game remaining on their regular-season schedule.
“It’s always good to get a win and make sure that we are improving and building momentum because we have another big game next week,” said Barbe head coach Mike Cutrera. “I like the way our kids are playing right now.”
The win means that Quinn, Fontenot and the rest of the Barbe seniors have defeated the Tors each of their four years.
“This was a huge win and we feel like we are back on track now,” Quinn said. “We are really rolling now and hopefully we can keep this going into the playoffs.”
Quinn broke free down the right sideline and nabbed an 18-yard pass from a scrambling Fontenot in the third quarter. The catch gave him 5,882 career receiving yards, making him Louisiana’s all-time leading receiver.
“This is a great accomplishment,” Quinn said. “I have been blessed with great quarterbacks over the years, and I’m not done yet. We still have a lot of games to go and hopefully we can top it all off with a state championship.”
Although Sulphur (3-6, 2-4) managed to score three times, only one of its touchdowns came from the offense, thanks to a highlight performance from the Bucs’ defense.
“The defense was unbelievable tonight,” Cutrera said. “Our defensive line was great and allowed us to make some big plays.”
Sam Houston 35, Lafayette 28
LAFAYETTE — Just two weeks after picking up its first-ever Class 5A victory, Sam Houston got another.
The Broncos (4-5, 2-4) toppled host Lafayette (2-7, 0-6) in a District 3-5A game.
Garrett Powell ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns and Dustin Duhon threw for 218 yards and a score.
Powell scored on runs of 32 and 3 yards and Duhon completed a 41-yard scoring strike to Cliff Reid. Duhon also ran for a 4-yard score for Sam Houston (4-5, 2-4).
Lafayette (2-7, 0-6) was left looking for its first district win.
LaGrange 36, Opelousas 0
A month ago, many wondered the wisdom of playing a tough schedule.
A week from now it might all prove worth it.
After suffering through a winless first five weeks, LaGrange is a win away from claiming the District 4-4A championship outright.
The Gators clinched at least a share of the title when they knocked off winless Opelousas at the Swamp. That, coupled with Crowley’s 28-20 win over Eunice, gave LaGrange a one-game lead in the district heading into the final week of the regular season. The Gators (4-5, 4-1) have won four straight.
Opelousas (0-5, 0-9), which was hit recently with a rash of defections and suspensions, never mounted any type of offense, being outgained 238-19 by halftime.
DeRidder 34, Peabody 18
DERIDDER — The DeRidder Dragons moved to the top spot in District 3-4A, defeating the Peabody Warhorses to move one step closer to their first outright title since 1988.
The Dragons can to clinch the District 3-4A title next week when they host Tioga.
“Our kids came out and played well for a big win,” said DeRidder coach Eric Parmley. “We have a great group of kids and coaches, who are dedicated and believe in this program,” he said.
Dragons junior running back D’Angelo Reder led all rushers with 200 yards on 28 carries for three touchdowns, to break the 1,000-yard mark coming in with 1,072 yards.
Washington-Marion 40, Carroll 0
LAKE CHARLES — It couldn’t get any better for Washington-Marion.
After racing out to a 34-0 halftime lead the Charging Indians’ defense kept pace with its offense, pitching its first shutout of the season beating Carroll.
Quajae Boutte and Demond Delahoussaye connected on three touchdown passes to lead the W-M offense, which had 363 total yards and 16 first downs in the first half alone.
After Washington-Marion (5-4, 3-2) did its job, Crowley beat Eunice 28-20. That win gives the Charging Indians a chance to clinch a share of the District 4-4A championship if it beats cross-town rival LaGrange next Friday.
Bolton 48, Leesville 28
BOLTON — Leesville’s hopes of winning a share of a district title ended with a road loss.
The Wompus Cats (2-7, 2-2) saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Meanwhile, Bolton (4-5, 3-1) still has slim hopes of catching DeRidder for a share of the district crown but can only go into the playoffs as the league’s second team after falling earlier in the year to the Dragons.
Westlake 33, St. Louis 0
WESTLAKE — Westlake took care of business against St. Louis, and now it will have a chance to take care of district next week.
The Rams (5-4, 3-1) breezed to a 33-0 win over the Saints, setting up a battle in Jennings for the District 4-3A crown in Week 10.
Westlake’s offense gained 563 yards, with 346 coming from the arm of senior quarterback Tyler Johnson. Johnson was 22 of 30 with two touchdowns and added 66 yards and another score on 12 carries.
St. Louis (2-7, 0-4) missed field goal attempts of 47 and 55 yards in its two scoring threats. In the second half, the Saints didn’t have a first down until their final drive.
Jennings 33, Iowa 14
IOWA — The Jennings Bulldogs took care of business for the fifth straight week with a win at Iowa to keep the Bulldogs on top of the District 4-3A standings.
Iowa (7-2, 2-2) got great field position in the first quarter when Jennings kicker Seth Cox bobbled the ball on a punt attempt and kneeled down to pick it up, marking the ball dead at the Jennings 26-yard line. The Yellow Jackets ran the ball with Chaz Key seven straight times to go up 7-0.
But Jennings (6-3, 4-0) responded with three consecutive scores, highlighted by a 61-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kaleb Chaisson. The junior broke loose up the middle and showed off his breakaway speed en route to the score, which made it 14-7. The Bulldogs also converted a fourth-and-two attempt 34 yards for a touchdown on a short pass from Chaisson to wide receiver Malik Williams.
Jennings controlled the game in the second half, running for two more touchdowns. Lemontay Mouton sealed it with a 58-yard touchdown run up the middle in the fourth quarter.
South Beauregard 35, Iota 6
The Golden Knights were dominant up front on both sides of the ball, which prevented Iota from getting anything going in the District 4-3A matchup.
“Bottom line, South Beauregard pushed around upfront, offensively, defensively,” said Iota head coach Neal Legé. “We had no answers.”
It also meant that South Beauregard (6-3, 3-1) had everything going right for it in its running game to the tune of 285 yards. Iota (0-9, 0-4) remained winless this season.
Kinder 19, Welsh 18, 2OT
KINDER — The Yellow Jackets knew the game would come down to the wire and special teams would have to make some big plays. Kinder made the big plays in overtime and defeated the Welsh Greyhounds in double overtime to clinch a share of the District 4-2A title.
The Yellow Jackets were able to force overtime by scoring late in the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds went for a fourth-down conversion on their own 30-yard line but were stopped short giving Kinder the ball on the 30-yard line. Austin Pickle then scored on a 1-yard run with 4:46 to play in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 6-6
The first overtime saw Kinder (8-1, 4-0) take possession first and scored on its first play when Pickle scored on a 10-yard run, but the two point conversion failed. Welsh (7-2, 3-1) then scored on fourth down in the first overtime when Hayden Freeland connected with Keshon Bell on a 7-yard pass, but the Kinder special teams blocked the extra point to force the second overtime.
The Greyhounds took the lead in the second overtime when Bell scored on a 3-yard run to take an 18-12 lead. Bell was stopped by the Yellow Jackets defense from scoring a two-point conversion. The Yellow Jackets when Pickle scored his third touchdown of the night on a 2-yard run to tie the game. A successful extra point by Trenton Kirklin ended the game in the second overtime.
Vinton 28, DeQuincy 0
VINTON — Four Lions players scored and Vinton took advantage of four turnovers by DeQuincy for an easy District 4-2A victory.
Dakota Marcantel, James McMillon and Tanner Guidry scored on shorts runs for the Lions (7-2, 1-2), while Anfernee Dixson added a 7-yard touchdown catch.
Up 14-0 in the middle of the fourth quarter, Vinton used interceptions on back-to-back drives to slam the door on DeQuincy.
Dixon picked off a Chase Dyer pass and Vinton drove 47 yards on 13 plays to make it 21-0 with just over 7 minutes to go in the game. On the next series, Anthone Hillery intercepted Dyer and returned it 21 yards to set up McMillon’s 2-yard scoring run.
DeQuincy (3-6, 1-3) was held to 110 yards, fumbled it away twice and was flagged five times for 51 yards.
Menard 48, Pickering 25, final

Lake Arthur 40, Mamou 0
LAKE ARTHUR — Trey Hargrave scored four touchdowns and rushed for 195 yards as Lake Arthur dominated Mamou.
The Tigers limited Mamou’s offense to 131 total yards while forcing three turnovers.
Glen Guidry opened the scoring for Lake Arthur (6-3, 2-2) with a 4-yard run less than five minutes into the contest.
Many 42, Oakdale 0
OAKDALE — James Carhee ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead Many to victory in a District 3-2A showdown with Oakdale.
The Tigers (8-1, 3-1) took control of the district with the 42-0 victory.
Carhee did his work on 15 carries and got help from quarterback Zavier Dias, who ran for 73 yards and a pair of scores and he also threw for 118 and another touchdown.
Meanwhile, Many’s defense was in control. It limited Oakdale (4-5, 2-2) to 86 yards of total offense.
Many’s win, coupled with Menard’s win over Pickering, left the Tigers tied with Rosepine for the district lead.
Rosepine 27, Bunkie 24, final

Basile 40, Elton 12
ELTON — Basile’s Mason Deshotel caught five passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns and added another touchdown on a punt return as Basile blew by Elton.
Bearcats (9-0, 6-0) running back Kendrick Ceaser ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries.
Basile remains atop the District 4-1A standings but must beat Oberlin next week to clinch the district title.
Elton running back Marcus Lemoine led the way for the Indians, running 25 times for 176 yards and scoring both of Elton’s touchdowns.
Oberlin 28, South Cameron 14
CREOLE — Oberlin’s Austin Darbonne ran for 137 yards and a touchdown and also had two interceptions as the Tigers cruised past South Cameron.
Oberlin (6-3, 4-1), which remained in a second-place tie in District 4-1A, led 28-0 entering the fourth quarter.
Tanner Hebert opened the scoring with a 27-yard run and quarterback Jeremy Fontenot scored twice on runs of 66 and 6 yards for the Tigers. Fontenot finished with 105 yards rushing and Hebert had 67.
South Cameron (2-7, 1-5) was led by quarterback Adam Broussard, who rushed for 137 yards and scored on a 2-yard run. South Cameron also got a scoring run from Jared Theriot, who had 60 rushing yards.
East Beauregard 58, Grand Lake 6
DRY CREEK — Every time Lee Glass touched the ball, he scored.
The East Beauregard running back carried the ball four times for 136 yards and touchdowns of 6, 14, 64 and 52 yards.
Behind his yardage, Kade Jackson’s 108 yards on four carries and Aaron Milner’s 84 yards on seven totes, East Beauregard (7-2, 5-1) rolled up 520 rushing yards.
Luke Miller led Grand Lake (1-8, 0-6) with 108 yards passing.
Hamilton Christian 16, Merryville 0
The Warriors picked up a win heading into the playoffs and guaranteed they will stay out of the district cellar with the victory.
Hamilton Christian (2-8, 2-4) will finish the regular season next week at Grand Lake (1-8, 0-6). Merryville dropped to 2-7 and 2-4.
