More information released on fatal shooting at local church

From staff reports

The Lake Charles man accused of fatal shooting a pastor at a local church Friday night had no known criminal history and was carrying two firearms, authorities said Saturday.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Woodrow Karey Jr., 2808 Forest Drive, used a shotgun when he killed Ronald J. Harris Sr. during a revival at the Tabernacle of Praise.

"Karey shot Harris twice," Myers said in a news release on Saturday. "Once when he walked into the church and a second time when Harris fell to the floor and Karey walked up to him and shot him at close range."

Karey turned himself in to authorities shortly after the shooting.

"Deputies picked up Karey at the corner of Deshotel and Opelousas streets minutes after the shooting," Myers said Saturday. "He directed them to two guns he discarded in a wooded area close to the intersection. One was a shotgun, the other a .22 pistol."

The 53-year-old Karey has been charged with second-degree murder and bond has been set at $1,000,000.

Early Saturday afternoon, a few people were at the church. They declined to comment.

The shooting happened around 8:20 p.m. and the motive is still under investigation.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory said Friday that 50-60 people were in the church at the time of the shooting and all will be interviewed by detectives.

The church, located at 307 Deshotel Lane, had brought in speaker from Georgia for the revival.

One church member, who declined to give her name, said she initially thought the gunman was part of a skit.

A woman came in screaming followed by a gunman, another witness said.

Karey waved the gun around, pointed it at Harris and said "you," another church member said.

Fear will cause you to LIE. Fear will cause people to get MURDERED.
A LIE is as tragic as a wild fire. The blame can only belong to the one who sat it; But many will suffer .
The TRUTH will set you free.

Many question, how could this be for someone who is known otherwise as calm, giving, and willing to serve. Something terribly wrong has happened. Praying for these families that the real truth be revealed so many will be healed. Praying that the body of Christ will not let this cause you to doubt God. He is yet on the throne.

This is such a horrible tragedy for all the families; the victim, the assailant, and especially the church family. So many question that answers will never satisfy in our minds, but God knows all. Hold to the Faith to get through the days, months and years ahead. Our God is a Comforter and a loving Redeemer. My heart hurts for these families. LORD HAVE MERCY AND GRANT US YOUR PEACE.

I am so sorry to hear of this happening in a Church...I guarantee there's a woman involved somewhere somehow.
