McNeese State University students will face a new parking situation when they return to campus today, as construction on a three-story parking garage continues.
McNeese has opened a temporary lot at the old Charles Cinema property on Sale Road for students. The lot can hold 300 cars. Parking will also be available at the stadium.
“Parking at the stadium is guaranteed instead of basically driving around and around campus looking for a spot,” said Candace Townsend, the university spokeswoman. “The smart thing to do is to come a little earlier, park at the stadium and walk from there to class.”
Vernon Drive, which cuts through campus, is also closed due to the construction of the parking garage. Townsend said students should enter campus through Common Street.
For the first time, all commuter parking lots on campus will be open parking, meaning no spots will be designated for certain grade levels.
“Parking will be first come, first serve, the way the parking garage will be in the spring,” Townsend said.
Faculty and staff parking lots and resident lots will still only be available for those groups.
But parking spots for residents could be harder to come by this fall since McNeese’s residence halls are already almost full.
“As of last Thursday, the residence halls were at 97 percent capacity, and that’s before late registration,” Townsend said.
She also said McNeese hopes to see enrollment numbers close to last year’s this semester. The school enrolled 8,791 students last fall. Late registration continues through Thursday.

Title: Another McNeese Rip-off
This seems like nothing more than a way for McNeese and its gastavo style police department to generate revenue. I'm quite certain that nothing will change; in fact it will more than likely increase the number of frivilous parking citations issued by McNeese campus police.
If you're a McNeese student who has dealt with such issues in the past, now is the time to speak out. That's if the American Press even publishes this or your concerns.
