Ouachita deputies arrest man on bigamy charge

Last Modified: Friday, August 03, 2012 5:22 PM

MONROE (AP) — A West Monroe man has been arrested for bigamy after his estranged wife said she received his new marriage license in the mail.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office says 32-year-old Steve Pope was booked Friday into the Ouachita Correctional Center. No bond was set.

The News-Star reports Pope's wife told deputies his new marriage license was mailed from Union County, Ark., to her address. The document stated he married another woman on July 12 but she says although they're estranged neither of them had sought legal counsel for a divorce.

Pope reportedly told deputies he thought he was divorced, and then went back to Union County on July 27 and had the marriage annulled.
