ABBEVILLE (AP) — The U.S. Senate on Friday approved the naming of the Abbeville post office in honor of a Vermilion Parish hero of the Vietnam War.

The facility will be known as the Sgt. Richard Franklin Abshire Post Office Building.

The announcement was made by U.S. Sen. Mary, Landrieu, D-La. A House resolution in the same matter was authored by U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, R-La.

Abshire, a platoon sergeant with the 4th Marine Division, died in battle in Vietnam in May 1968 and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
