Since the American Cancer Society declared itself the “Official Sponsor of Birthdays,” the Lake Charles branch of the Society will be popping corks and blowing out birthday candles at its Candles and Cocktails event.

The event is an upscale birthday party for adults, and it will be held at the Isle of Capri Casino Event Center at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Area director for the American Cancer Society, Katie McCarty, said, “We’re really excited about this new event which will be a great way for our donors to have fun while learning about our mission of creating a world in which there is less cancer and more birthdays.”

In that vein, patrons of the event will feel like they’ve stepped back in time to the birthday parties of their childhood, only with a more mature slant. McCarty said, “The Isle of Capri is hosting, so there will be hors d’oeuvres, a full dinner and, of course, birthday cake.”

The cocktail party will also play host to familiar birthday party activities such as caricature drawings and photo booths. Other activities will include a silent auction at which guests can bid on birthday cakes and other prizes. Some guests will even be given birthday gifts at random.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Bottoms Up, a cover band hailing from Baton Rouge which specializes in playing party songs that span from the 60’s to today.

Individuals can reserve a seat at the event for $100, while a table of eight can be reserved for $1,000. All proceeds will benefit the Lake Charles branch of ACS, whose contributions to health care services in the area will be highlighted at the event.

The ACS provides transportation assistance to patients throughout Louisiana. In 2011, it distributed over $5,000 to the local transportation funds of Christus St. Patrick and Lake Charles Memorial hospitals. Resources were also provided to more than 120 local patients in the way of wigs, hats, turbans and prostheses provided by The Patient Resource Room in the ACS Lake Charles office.

“Our number one priority is to find cures and save lives, but we also provide many patient support programs in Southwest Louisiana, and those are the things we’ll be highlighting,” McCarty said. “Cancer survivors and people who have lost someone to cancer and have decided to fight back with us will be our honored guests and will share their stories with our guests.”

Isle of Capri Casino will serve as the event’s presenting sponsor, with Hertz Investments, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana and First Federal Bank of Louisiana acting as financial sponsors.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based health organization dedicated to eliminating the threat of cancer as a major health problem through prevention, research, education, advocacy and service.
