Polls are open: Next governor will be decided today

Southwest Louisiana will join the rest of the state today in choosing a new governor and deciding on a host of other statewide and local elections, including several runoffs and tax referendums.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Voters should bring a driver’s license, a Louisiana special ID or some other generally recognized picture ID.

Governor: John Bel Edwards and David Vitter.

Lieutenant governor: Melvin “Kip” Holden and Billy Nungesser.

Attorney general: James “Buddy” Caldwell and Jeff Landry.

Allen

District 32 state representative: incumbent Dorothy Sue Hill and Llewellyn “Biscuit” Smith. 

The town of Kinder wants to rededicate and extend a 10-year, 0.3 percent sales tax, using 10 percent of proceeds for public library operations and 90 percent for sewage system operations. The tax would generate $154,000 a year.

Beauregard

District 32 state representative: incumbent Dorothy Sue Hill and Llewellyn “Biscuit” Smith.

Sheriff: Jim Jacobsen and incumbent Ricky L. Moses. 

Police Jury District 3C: Elvin D. “Doc” Holiday and Dan Lindsey.

Police Jury District 5: Ronnie Libick and Alex Quebedeaux.

The city of DeRidder is seeking continuation of a 10-year, 2.75-mill police and fire facilities property tax. The levy would represent a 0.15-mill increase over the 2.6 mills approved by voters in 2005. It would generate $180,995 annually.

Cameron

Clerk of court: Susan Racca and Recia LaBove Warner.

Police Jury District 2: Dino Hicks and George E. Shove. 

Police Jury District 7: Darryl L. Farque and Pat Sewell.

The Lower Cameron Hospital Service District is seeking renewal of a 10-year, 14-mill tax for hospital operations. It would generate $1.7 million annually.

Calcasieu

District 32 state representative: incumbent Dorothy Sue Hill and Llewellyn “Biscuit” Smith.

District 34 state representative: Wilford Dan Carter Sr. and incumbent A.B. Franklin.

Police Jury District 2: Calvin Collins and Dianna Ross.

Police Jury District 3: Eddie Earl Lewis Jr. and Shelly Mayo.

Police Jury District 10: Shalon Latour and incumbent Tony Stelly.

Sulphur residents will vote on measure to allow Sunday alcohol sales starting at noon. The measure wouldn’t affect hours for bars and stores that sell alcohol.

In Iowa, voters are being asked to renew a 10-year, one-cent sales tax for waterworks, street and park improvements. It would generate $554,775 annually.

Renewal of a separate 10-year, one-cent sales tax for streets, sidewalks and street lighting and sewage treatment facilities maintenance. It would generate $554,775 annually.

Waterworks Subdistrict No. W of Ward 3 District 12 is seeking a 10-year, 10-mill property tax for maintenance and operations. It would bring in $520,686 annually.

Police Jury District 3: Marcus O. Peterson and incumbent Milford Reed Jr.

Police Jury District 11: Butch Lafargue and incumbent Edward “Coach” Cormier.

Vernon

BESE District 4: Tony Davis and incumbent Mary Johnson Harris.

Police Jury District 2: Marvin Hilton and Ray Morrison.

Police Jury District 3: Frank Bonner and David Fox.

Rosepine police chief: Delbert Keel and Randall “Randy” Perry.

Some voters in Vernon Parish will also vote on the continuation of a 10-year, 2.75-mill police and fire facilities property tax for the city of DeRidder. The levy would represent a 0.15-mill increase over the 2.6 mills approved by voters in 2005. It is expected to generate $180,995 annually. 

Ward 3 Wardwide School District No. 160 is seeking continuation of a 10-year, 18.77-mill property tax for public elementary and secondary schools. It would generate $241,644 annually. 

The Ward 7 Wardwide School District is seeking continuation of a 10-year, 17.42-mill property tax, for public elementary and secondary schools. It would generate $315,735 annually.
