It will be up to the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office to decide whether a shooting last Friday was accidental or intentional, Lake Charles police said.

A 12-year-old boy was shot in the chest at his residence on 14th Street by a 16-year-old boy Friday. The 16-year-old transported the 12-year-old to the hospital.

The younger boy, who was transported to the LSU Health Sciences Unit in Shreveport, remains in critical condition but is improving, Deputy Police Chief Mark Kraus said Tuesday.

Neither the name of the shooter nor the suspect have been released because they’re both minors.

Police charged the 16-year-old with aggravated battery and illegal use of a dangerous instrumentality.

Beth McGee of the District Attorney’s Office said the office could not comment because the case involves a juvenile suspect.
