A 12-year-old boy shot Friday night remains in critical condition, Lake Charles police said on Monday.

Police are still investigating what transpired, Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said.

The boy, who was shot once in the chest at his home on 14th Street, was initially hospitalized at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital before being transferred to the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

A 16-year-old boy was placed in juvenile detention and charged with aggravated battery and illegal use of dangerous instrumentalities, which is defined by Louisiana law as “the intentional or criminally negligent discharging of any firearm, or the throwing, placing, or other use of any article, liquid, or substance, where it is foreseeable that it may result in death or great bodily harm to a human being.”

Title: Use of Language?

The use of the word "instrumentalities" instead of just plain old "instruments" is rather dumb. What purpose does it serve except to take up more space?
