A 25-year-old Lake Charles woman has been arrested after leaving her two young children alone for more than four hours, city police said.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Octavia Nichole Pichon, 1706 2nd St., was charged with child desertion after leaving her 3 to 4 year old and 1 year old at home unsupervised.

Bond was set at $1,000.

The older child, who was seen eating chips off the floor, was wearing a white T-shirt and nothing else, Kraus said. The 1-year-old was wearing a shirt and had a soiled diaper which “had not been changed recently.”

“Mrs. Pichon stated that she left the children home because they were asleep,” Kraus said. “The children were turned over to Child Protection.”

Westlake man charged with burglary, theft

A 20-year-old Westlake man has been charged with aggravated burglary, theft over $1,500, theft of a firearm, identity theft and simple criminal damage to property over $500, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Joshua R. Bryant, 1801 Augusta St., was arrested April 10, two days after burglarizing a home on W. Dick Hayes Road in Westlake.

“The victim said when returned home he saw Bryant driving away from his home at a high rate of speed,” Myers said in a news release. “The victim was able to get a detailed description, including the license plate number, of the SUV in which Bryant fled. The victim discovered the rear door of his home was shattered and several items were stolen from his home, including eight firearms, an video game system, several pieces of jewelry, electronics and a checkbook.”

Bryant was released after posting the $40,000 bond set by Judge Clayton Davis.

Sobriety, seat belt checkpoint set for today

State police will host a DWI and seat belt compliance checkpoint somewhere in Calcasieu Parish tonight.

Sgt. James Anderson, Troop D spokesman, said the checkpoint will begin at 10 p.m. and end at 2 a.m. Saturday.

“Our mission will be to find and remove impaired drivers from the road before they can cause injury or death to themselves or others,” Anderson said. “We will also ticket vehicle occupants who are not properly restrained.”

Anderson said the majority of vehicle occupants who die in crashes in the state are not wearing a seat belt.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.
