A sentencing hearing for Billie Joe Weldon was held Monday, but his sentencing was set for later this year.

Weldon was convicted of manslaughter by a 10-2 verdict in the August 2009 death of 27-year-old Kimberly Ann Stephens.

Weldon will face up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 10.

Weldon was charged with second-degree murder, which carries a life sentence, but the jury opted for the lesser charge.

Stephens’ body was found in an empty lot on Granberry Road on Aug. 26, 2009.

Prosecutors said Weldon beat her to death by bashing her head into the concrete, hitting her with a crescent wrench, then cutting her throat. He then dragged her body out of view of the road, prosecutors said.
