OBERLIN — More than 4,000 students returned to classrooms with a smooth start and few problems Thursday in Allen Parish for the first day of school, according to the school superintendent.
“Things seem to have started off real well for the first day,” Superintendent Michael Doucet said.
“We are expecting a good year. A lot of changes have been made, but everyone has been working hard and are geared up and ready to go.”
Among the changes, the parish’s alternative school, previously housed only in Oakdale, has been established at three sites to better accommodate the rural schools.
Virtual assessments have been added to help students at home, and educators are implementing the state’s new curriculum with Common Core standards.
Preliminary first-day enrollment figures appear to be up slightly for the parish’s 11 schools, with overall enrollment at 4,462 — an increase of about 100 students over last year, Doucet said.
Kinder middle and high schools appeared to have the largest increase, he said.
Official enrollment will be reported to the state on Oct. 1.
The parish also had several new administrators and more than two dozen new employees who welcomed students back to school.
