Simien eyes north LC street renaming

Seven months remain before the first section of the Enterprise Boulevard extension project is scheduled for completion, but a city official is already contemplating a street name change. District A City Councilman Marshall Simien thinks the anticipated completion of the $10.9 million project offers an incentive to also give the neighborhood through which the road stretches a new moniker. “With all the negative news that has been written about the northern part of Lake Charles, which I believe has been overdramatized, I think it would be good to rebrand the area,” he said. Simien wants to change the name of the road that runs between Fournet and Katherine streets to Riverside Parkway. His grand plan is to refer to all the plots of land next to the river in north Lake Charles as the Riverside District. “Historically, that is what the area was called. We already have the Riverside Park. This is one of the most beautiful parts of the city. I think rebranding it will help us get away from the negativity associated with north Lake Charles.” In order for a name change to take place, a petition will have to be presented to the City Council for approval. Simien intends to get paperwork started and then contact residents living near the roadway for their input. By announcing his intentions, Simien said, he is “getting ahead of the curve.” “We have the Downtown District and Lakefront District. I think adding another district will help us to be able to market the city and community.” According to Simien, drivers can now drive over the Rufus Mayfield Jr. Memorial Overpass, which had been closed for months to allow for infrastructure improvements to Enterprise Boulevard that extend to Fournet Street. Currently, drivers are able to turn onto Fournet. In July, motorists will be able to continue to Opelousas Street.
