Homes being built in new Calcasieu Parish subdivisions with community sewer systems could have a cheaper monthly fee if the Police Jury approves an ordinance to reduce the rate.

Members of the parish Public Works Committee on Tuesday approved setting a $15 flat fee if a home uses less than 2,000 gallons of water per month. Allen Wainwright, public works director, said the lower rate would take effect “at the point of final inspection” and would remain in place until the home is sold.

The full Police Jury will consider the item at its regular meeting Thursday.

If water use exceeds 2,000 gallons, Wainwright said the rate would increase to the standard $35 per month.

The Police Jury in 2012 agreed to have the parish maintain community sewer systems in new subdivisions if they are developed according to parish standards. The fees pay for operation and maintenance costs.

Wainwright said the lower rate was proposed because homes being built aren’t using water or sewer services much. “Homeowners and businesses need to get water and sewer connected in the process, but they are not using a significant amount of sewer at all, other than testing a sink or commode,” he said.

Wainwright said the cheaper rate will help new subdivisions, including one in the Ward 4 area on White Road. “There are about 10 to 12 homes there now, but it’s starting to grow,” he said. “There are at least two homes being built.”

Wainwright said the proposed rate was modeled after those of cities like Sulphur, Westlake and DeQuincy, which have transitional rates for homes that are under construction.(MGNonline)
