FENTON — A 20-year-old Tickfaw man died early Monday when the vehicle he was riding in struck an 18-wheeler on U.S. 165, Fenton police said.
Christopher Bernard Jones, a passenger in a vehicle driven by his 20-year-old cousin, Larry Jermod Smith, of Hammond, died at the scene from injuries he suffered in the crash, said Officer Russell Benoit.
The vehicle hit the back end of the 18-wheeler on U.S. 165 just south of La. 102 at about 4:30 a.m. Monday, Benoit said. The 18-wheeler was a tanker truck, but was empty at the time, said Police Chief Luther “Sam” Alfred.
The accident may have occurred when the car either hydroplaned on the wet road or the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing it to spin out of control, Benoit said.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Jonathan Andrus, 49, of Lake Charles, reportedly told police he saw the vehicle spinning toward him before it hit the back end.
Both drivers were taken to Allen Parish Hospital in stable condition, Benoit said. Results of toxicology tests are pending for both drivers, he said. No charges have been filed.
