OBERLIN — An Oberlin woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a man pulled from his burning home earlier this week.

Ebony Ackless, 31, was arrested on a second-degree murder charge at about 4 p.m. Thursday, Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert said.

“She became a suspect in the investigation after her name came up a few times as a person of interest,” he said. “She came in this afternoon and confessed during questioning.”

A drug deal gone wrong appears to be the motive for the slaying, Hebert said.

Fred Green, 59, of Oberlin was pulled from his burning mobile home by a passer-by who noticed smoke coming from the residence and went to check on him at about 8:15 a.m. Monday, he said.

A preliminary autopsy indicated that Green died of multiple stab wounds to the neck and head.

The person was able to pull Green’s body from his bedroom just before the home became engulfed in flames, Hebert said.

Officials are awaiting the results of the state fire marshal’s investigation into the fire’s cause, he said. Authorities have obtained a search warrant for Ackless’ residence, Hebert said.

“We want to find the clothing she was wearing at the time to see if there is any trace of evidence on them,” he said.

Authorities are also awaiting the results of analysis of forensic evidence taken from the scene.

Ackless is being held without bond.
