Forecasters expect an upper-level low stretching from Arkansas to east Texas to linger through the week, making for some more wet days in Southwest Louisiana.
The rain began a couple hours after dawn Monday, and by 3 p.m. forecasters said almost 2 inches of rain had fallen around Lake Charles.
The National Weather Service says there will be a 60 percent to 70 percent chance of rain today, 50 percent to 60 percent Wednesday and Thursday, and a 40 percent chance of rain Friday through Sunday.
This month, 2.71 inches of rain have fallen — 38.18 inches over the year.
Lake Charles National Weather Service forecaster Stephen Carboni said Monday’s rainfall amounts might have broken a record if they’d occurred on Sunday instead.
Lake Charles police responded to a number of accidents during Monday’s heavy rains, said Deputy Chief Mark Kraus. And a number or roads were flooded briefly.
Kraus encouraged people “to pay closer attention to their driving habits” in rainy weather.
“You have to get to work. You have to get where you have to go,” he said. “But be careful. There is no need to involve yourself in a wreck.”
