A driver in a Friday crash involving an automobile and a Lake Charles city fire truck parked at a red light has died.
The victim is a 60-year-old man from Lake Charles, a Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office official said.
A fire department official said that at about 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Opelousas and Simmons streets, a four-door vehicle “crossed the center line” and hit the fire truck. Assistant Chief Gerald Fontenot said there were no injuries among the crew of the pumper truck, which is based at Company 3 on Moeling Street.
“They (the truck crew) tried to get his (the driver’s) attention by blowing the horn, but he drove straight at them,” Fontenot said.
Acadian Ambulance transported the victim to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead, said Charlie Hunter, a Coroner’s Office investigator.
Hunter said the victim died as a result of injuries from the crash.
Lake Charles police Cpl. Sammy Kingsley is leading the investigation.
