From staff reports

Charles Z. Cole of Lake Charles has been named the 2012 recipient of the Emmitt J. Douglas Memorial Medal presented by the Louisiana State NAACP.

Cole was nominated for the honor, the highest internal award given by the group, by the NAACP’s Cameron Parish branch, of which he is a lifetime member.

In the nomination letter, Cole was praised for ‘‘consistently giving his time and talents to securing the rights of all people.’’

Cole, an accomplished musician, provides music ministry for several churches and at local events. He has received numerous civic and community awards and was instrumental in changing the name of the Monkey Island Ferry in Cameron to the Martin Luther King Jr. Ferry.

The award was presented last month at the NAACP Louisiana State Conference in Lafayette.
