Former McNeese and Barbe football player Janzen Jackson has been charged with murder in a California courtroom.
Jackson is accused of killing his mother's boyfriend, Frank Herrera, on Sept. 11, 2013, and was arraigned in May.
His next court date is July 15.
Officials allege Jackson strangled Herrera and left his body to decompose in the back of a car for three days.
After finishing his high school career at Barbe, Jackson went to the University of Tennessee, where he was kicked off the team. He then played one year at McNeese before leaving school a year early and signing a free agent contract with the New York Giants, but failed to make the team. He then played for the Toronto Argonauts.
According to authorities, Jackson was living with his mother and her boyfriend at the time of the incident.
