First Christian Church in Lake Charles is offering free self-defense classes for girls and women ages 12 and up.
There will be two portions of classes which will be held in conjunction to one another.
The self-defense classes will be taught by Josh Quayhagen, of Performance Evolution, which is a training gym in Lake Charles. The other is the predator awareness portion, which will be taught by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Carmen Morris, who started the classes, said more than 30 people have signed up and anyone is invited to come.
“In the self-defense classes we’ll learn to break free of a grip or a hold, as well as stances and techniques to use if striking becomes necessary,” Morris said.
Morris said the Sheriff’s office will teach body and Internet safety.
“They’ll give the knowledge of what their space is and who can and cannot come into it,” Morris said. “Body safety basically involves staying in groups and making a phone call when in danger.”
She said Internet safety includes what is deemed appropriate and inappropriate for the Internet.
“We hear more and more stories every day of adults taking advantage of little kids,” Morris, who is a mother of three, said. “We wanted to do something about it.”
Morris said safety is a topic that needs to be approached by all parents and children.
“I know it is a sensitive subject to talk to your kids about, but I think this will help start that conversation,” Morris said. “The classes will open up that channel of communication. This is not something to be kept quiet.”
The first class will start at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at First Christian Church, located at 2525 2nd Ave. in Lake Charles.
