A McNeese State University football star from the early 1980s was involved in a weekend shooting in Vinton, authorities said.
Vinton Police Chief Ricky Fox said Stephen Starring, 51, 918 Stevenson St., shot Dillon Worthy, 20, 904 Stevenson St., in the lower back early Sunday morning.
Fox said Starring reported a home invasion, but did not tell authorities that he had shot one of the men.
Starring was the offensive MVP of the 1980 Independence Bowl between McNeese and Southern Miss. Starring also played seven years in the NFL.
Fox said police responded to a report of a home invasion on Stevenson Street at 3:38 a.m.
He said Starring said Worthy and another man, Joseph Batiste, 47, 904 Stevenson St., came to his door, forced their way in and began beating him.
Starring was able to break away, Fox said, and Worthy and Batiste began to run. Fox said Starring shot Worthy in the back, although it was unclear whether Worthy was still in the house or had exited the door when he was hit.
Worthy’s mother reported to police that her son had been shot and he was flown to a local hospital, Fox said. Starring was also taken to a local hospital, he said. Both were released and are being held in the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
Fox said Starring was charged with attempted second-degree murder because “when you disengage and guys take off running, you can’t shoot them in the back.”
Fox said the three knew each other. Starring was able to identify Worthy and Batiste by name, and the latter two corroborated that there had been a fight. Worthy and Batiste went to Starring’s residence to reclaim money, Fox said.
After he was arrested, Starring’s home was burglarized in what was believed to be retaliation for shooting Worthy, Fox said. He said no arrests have been made in the burglary.
Starring is being held on $300,000 bond.
Worthy, who is being held on $225,000 bond, was charged with home invasion, aggravated second-degree battery, simple criminal property damage between $500 and $50,000, and attempted armed robbery.
Batiste, who is being held on $400,000 bond, was charged with home invasion, aggravated second-degree battery, simple criminal property damage less than $500 and attempted armed robbery.
Fox said the shooting was the first in Vinton since he took office eight years ago. He said the department’s records were destroyed by a fire in 2005.

Title: Stephen Starring's Murder Charge
If a couple of punks had broken into my house and were attacking me, I'd have done the same thing Stephen Starring did. There's no reason to just let them get away because they decided to run off.

Title: Stephen Starring's murder charge
Is Stephen supposed to remember the statue about defending himself when attacked by multiple perps that mean you bodily harm or possibly death. You got to suspect he was scared, mad and confused when this went down. His mind must have been racing with little time to make a rational decision to save his life. Give me a break, what would you have done, really, what would you have done.
