First Pentecostal in Sulphur to host groundbreaking

SULPHUR — First Pentecostal Church of Sulphur is bursting at the seams. According to pastor Harlan Morgan, the small church has grown substantially in the past year — so much that on Sunday mornings, Morgan said, Sunday school classes are held in cubicles in the fellowship hall and even in the church’s kitchen area.

According to Morgan, the church has been working hard to raise money for a needed expansion, and now its efforts have finally come to fruition. On Sunday, March 30, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held to kick off construction of a new Sunday school facility.

Morgan said the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary with prayer and worship; at 10:30, the congregation will move outside to the building site where Scriptures will be read, a prayer will be offered and a symbolic groundbreaking will take place.

Mayor Chris Duncan and District 2 City Council Member Mike Koonce will take part.

“Without a doubt, God has had his hands on this church, helping it grow and finding the funds to expand the structure,” Morgan said. “This puts hands on the vision that we’ve already got. It’s symbolic of moving forward, honoring the past, the doctrine and the things that we’ve been handed.”

Morgan said that since he came to the church in November 2012, it has been working diligently to minister to the community. Every Saturday, the church’s van ministry team runs routes throughout Sulphur to touch base with families, he said. Morgan also said church members minister on their own as well.

“When we think about 22,000 people in Sulphur, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” he said. “There are a lot of people to reach.” Morgan believes the church will continue to grow and even had the architect prepare a drawing of a future sanctuary on the site plan.

Morgan said what has also helped with the church’s growth is the atmosphere. “We are a warm and friendly and spirit-filled church,” he said. “Visitors always comment that they feel so comfortable and welcome here.”
