State Police and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DWI checkpoint Friday at undisclosed location in Calcasieu Parish.

State Police Troop D spokesman Sgt. James Anderson said the checkpoint will run from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday.

“The Fourth of July holiday period is deadly,” Anderson said in a news release. “According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 392 people were killed in crashes during the holiday in 2010. Of those fatalities, 39 percent involved at least one intoxicated driver or motorcycle operator.”

Anderson said two people died in impaired driving crashes last year in our area during the Fourth of July holiday.

“Our mission will be to find and remove impaired drivers from the road before they can cause injury or death to themselves or others,” Anderson said. “Furthermore, overtime funding has been provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and additional troopers will be on patrol over holiday period (July 3-8) looking for impaired and aggressive drivers.”

Anderson offered these tips to avoid a drunk-driving disaster:

• Plan a safe way home before the fun begins.

• Before drinking, designate a sober driver.

If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to gethome safely.

If you see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact State Police by dialing *LSP (*577) on your cell phone.

If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
