Three Cameron men charged with illegal shrimping

CALCASIEU LAKE (AP) — Three Cameron Parish fishermen have been accused of violating the law by placing a shrimp net across the opening of a water control structure in Calcasieu Lake.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries cited 36-year-old Anthony G. Theriot, 50-year-old Philip LeJeune Sr. and 37-year-old Jerimie M. Pugh for leaving fishing nets unattended, blocking the passage of fish, taking shrimp with illegal gear and trawling at night.
Agents said Wednesday that the trio placed a trawl across the Grand Bayou water control structure on May 29. Agents seized 661 pounds of shrimp, two speckled trout, a shrimp trawl and their boat.
The men were fishing in Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge.
They face paying fines, jail time and federal charges because commercial fishing is banned on the national wildlife refuge.
