The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office sent 20 deputies to Plaquemines Parish on Thursday morning to assist officials there in dealing with devastation caused by Tropical Storm Isaac.

“We did an assessment with the other sheriffs throughout the state. We have several sheriffs that are in need of some help,” Sheriff Tony Mancuso said Thursday.

“We’re actually deploying to Plaquemines Parish. We’ll be there in a couple of hours. Obviously if you’ve seen the news, they’ve had a lot of devastation in the Plaquemines area. I spoke with the sheriff in Plaquemines directly today, and we’re going to help him out. We have assets and manpower they need.”

Plaquemines Parish sustained significant flooding as a result of the storm, which left many residents stranded. The parish is among the worst affected by Isaac.

The team from Calcasieu will help patrol the area and provide extra supplies to the sheriff’s office there. CPSO sent three K-9 units and two Humvees along with the deputies.

Mancuso said his deputies would be in Plaquemines for five or six days, and then he would “re-evaluate if the sheriff still needs our assistance.”

“We’ll probably send 20 more deputies to relieve the 20 deputies there and relieve our assets at that time,” Mancuso said.

“We recognize that we have a job here to do, and we will not sacrifice any of our own law enforcement. But you know they need our help, and we’re willing to help them. That’s what we do in Louisiana, that’s what we do in Calcasieu Parish.”
