‘Autism Rocks — Again!’ fundraiser a great time for a good cause

Think for a moment about Mardi Gras. Picture it. Take in the details. Did you do it? Are you done? Good job.

That whirl of beads, feathers, music and masks you pictured is a pretty decent composite sketch of Bag of Donuts, the band that sounds like a breakfast special but looks like a kabuki play. Bobby Hoerner, Johnathan Hoerner, Jerry Christopher Jr. and Kevin George bring their rock star style to the greatest hits from every era. They cover everything from Steppenwolf to Lady Gaga, a blend they’ve dubbed Superpop.

On Nov. 15, Bag of Donuts will rock out at L’Auberge Casino Resort for Autism Rocks — Again!, a fundraiser to benefit Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana.

Autism Services is a non-profit agency founded by family members of adults with autism. The organization provides a safe, caring home for autistic adults who need more care than their families can provide.

“As kids with disabilities, there are mandated services the government has to provide for them, but after age 21 there are no mandated services, so parents are kind of up a creek,” Geri Landry, founding member and president of the board of Autism Services, said. “We accept them into homes, and once they’re in homes, that’s their home for the rest of their lives. We’re the only one in the state that provide homes specifically for adults with autism.”

Previous fundraisers Elvis, Elvis Comes Again and Autism Rocks have helped the group purchase and equip three homes. Now they have purchased a fourth, and the proceeds from Autism Rocks – Again! will help staff and stock the new home.

Attendees of the event can look forward to great music, an open dance floor and a live auction with items like an LSU tailgating package complete with tickets to the LSU/Texas A&M game and a golf package with rounds along the Aubudon Golf Trail. Elvis, Waylon, Willie, & the Boys, a classic country band featuring John Ieyoub and Greg Blanchard, will open for Bag of Donuts. There will be a cash bar at the event.

Autism Rocks — Again! Will begin at 6 p.m. at 777 Ave. L’Auberge. The event ends at 10 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person at eventbrite.com or by calling Autism Services at 436-5001. You can also purchase tickets at the Autism Services office at 3006 Common St. Corporate sponsorships are available; contact Geri Landry at the Autism Services office. Landry said the support of the community, both at events like Autism Rocks — Again! And throughout the years, is what keeps the organization going.

“We just bought a fourth home, which is awesome when you think about we just started and we already bought our fourth home,” Landry said. “That’s all through community support. This community has been very supportive. We’re very blessed that people support us so well.”””
