OAKDALE — The Allen Parish Airport has received a $1.3 million federal grant for a drainage project to help maintain a safe approach to the runway.

The grant, among more than $13 million set aside by the U.S. Department of Transportation for regional airports statewide, was announced Monday by U.S. Sen. David Vitter.

Airport Manager Joel Johnson said the money will be used to improve the north approach runway near a large drainage ditch that runs across the property.

“Right now it is hard to maintain and keep the trees out of the way,” Johnson said. “Once the project is complete we will be able to mow and maintain the area.”

The project will also improve safety by allowing the airport to better meet clearance requirements by eliminating trees and other obstructions, Johnson said.

Merrick Construction of Cottonport has been awarded a $1.6 million contract for the work, which is expected to begin by next month, he said

The state is covering 10 percent of the cost, nearly $1.5 million, Johnson said.

The last improvement to the 538-acre airport was construction of a 3,000-foot taxiway that was completed in 2011.

The project included remarking of the runway.

Future plans call for widening the runway to accommodate larger jet traffic.

The airport averaged a daily use of 39 general aviation and military aircraft for a 12-year period ending May 16, according to AirNav.com.

The airport is owned by the Allen Parish Police Jury.(MGNonline)
