Five people were unharmed after their 17-foot runabout vessel sank Sunday morning after an excessive wake caused by a 3-level jet yacht near the Interstate 210 boat launch.
“We got a call at 10:28 a.m., and we responded to a boat that was swamped,” said petty officer Levi Denham with the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Lake Charles. “It was an accident as far as we can tell. The five people swam safely ashore on Rabbit Island. The Coast Guard was able to recover their boat with a de-watering pump by 12:48 p.m.
“The only leads we have is a 3-level jet yacht, which is white in color,” Denham said. “If he was in a no-wake zone he was supposed to take into account the smaller vessels.”
Denham said they are going off of reports of the people who went overboard.
