Phillip J. Lane, II, 23, 407 Vincent Drive, Vinton, was charged with accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and accessory after the fact to armed robbery.

The arrests were made in connection with the murder of 33-year-old Jody L. Barlow. Deputies found Barlow’s body with multiple gunshot wounds Aug. 27 in a wooded area off Old River Road in Starks close to the Calcasieu and Beauregard parish lines.

Zachary Bench, 21, of Vinton, was arrested Aug. 31 and charged with second-degree murder, armed robbery and obstruction of justice. Authorities said Demarest is Bench’s girlfriend and that Lane is an acquaintance.

Shortly after Barlow’s body was discovered, investigators learned his 2014 Dodge pickup truck, Polaris utility vehicle and trailer had gone missing. Sheriff Tony Mancuso said Demarest, Lane and Bench had possession of the truck and information about Barlow’s death. Authorities on Aug. 26 found Barlow’s truck, utility vehicle and trailer burned in a wooded area near the 2000 block of Green Moore Road in Starks.

Mancuso said there was evidence that led investigators to arrest Demarest and Lane.

“I think we knew from the beginning that there were others involved,” he said. “We do know (Bench) obviously had to have help getting back from where he burned the truck. When you choose to ignore and not inform police about what’s going on, you become an accessory.”

Mancuso said at a news conference Aug. 31 that Bench and Barlow “had not been friends that long.”

Judge David Ritchie set Demarest’s bond at $125,000, while Lane’s bond was set at $200,000. Bench’s bond was set at $1.8 million.

Mancuso said the investigation is continuing and that there could be additional arrests.””
