While the District 3-5A football race is up in the air again, the District 4-4A race is taking on a familiar look as LaGrange makes another late-season charge.

The Gators sit alone the district standings with a 3-0 record and will look to take another step toward the title when they host Beau Chene tonight.

In District 3-5A, Sulphur’s loss to Acadiana threw the race wide open, with the Tors, Barbe, Acadiana and Carencro tied for first place with 3-1 district records, and Sam Houston on the fringe at 2-2.

This week, Sam Houston (5-2) travels to Acadiana (4-3), Barbe (5-2) hosts Comeaux (3-4) and Sulphur (4-3) plays at Lafayette (4-3, 1-3).

Tors head coach Jeff Wainwright said the Lions are no pushover. Lafayette lost by three points to Acadiana and by seven to Barbe.

“They run the ball real well,” Wainwright said. “They have three good athletes in the backfield.

“They are playing good defense and their kicker (Steven Artigue) is going to UL-Lafayette; he keeps them in the game and makes you drive the length of the field. Good defense, good ground game, good kicking game is why they have beaten people.”

The Tors have won two consecutive road games. Wainwright said being forced to play home games in Lake Charles has made bus trips no big deal.

“This whole year has been ‘Hey, let’s load the bus and go find a place to play,’” Wainwright said. “We have just focused on trying to get better every week. There has been so much stuff we can’t control as far as where we play them, so ‘get on the bus and play where ever it stops’ has been our attitude.”

Barbe has won three straight games over Comeaux and is unbeaten in three home games. Sam Houston will travel to face a resurgent Acadiana team that has scored 63 points over the last two weeks (wins over Comeaux and Sulphur) after being held to a total of 59 points in its previous four games, three of which were losses.

In District 4-4A, Beau Chene (3-4, 1-2) will try to cool off torrid LaGrange (3-4, 3-0), which is averaging 40.5 points per game during its three-game winning streak.

Washington-Marion (2-5, 2-2) will look to build on last week’s 26-14 win over Beau Chene when it hosts Opelousas (1-6, 0-3). In its first two district home games, W-M has lost by seven to Rayne and by one to Crowley.(Rick Hickman/American Press)
