Equipment returned to Phelps due to lack of storage space at Angola

A truckload of equipment leaving Phelps Correctional Center for Angola State Penitentiary on Wednesday had to be unloaded because of a lack of storage room, state officials said.

Pam LaBorde, communications director for the state Department of Corrections, said she was unsure if the truck had left Phelps yet Wednesday when a decision was made to keep its contents at Phelps because of “storage issues” at Angola.

LaBorde said corrections officials are working on an inventory list of all equipment removed from Phelps.

She said a decision on what to do with the prison has not yet been made. The state closed Phelps on Nov. 1 after 54 years as a state prison.

When the state announced the decision in September, Phelps employed 269 workers and housed nearly 900 inmates.
