Barbe, LaGrange, Iowa, Jennings and Basile win in second round (with state scores)
Southwest Louisiana went 5-3 Friday night.
Barbe, LaGrange, Iowa, Jennings and Basile scored big victories in the second round of the prep football playoffs. DeRidder, Rosepine and Oberlin all lost.
No. 2 seed Barbe beat Byrd, LaGrange crushed St. Martinville, Iowa downed North Vermilion, Jennings held off Loranger and Basile stopped Plain Dealing New Tech.

Friday's Games
Barbe 38, Byrd 21
A hat trick of touchdowns from Trey Quinn and the nimble feet of quarterback Kennon Fontenot powered Barbe to the win.
The Bucs (11-1) advance to the quarterfinals. They will travel to Bossier City next week to play at Parkway (11-1), which advanced with a 31-28 win over Hahnville.
Barbe dominated the first half of play against Barbe, taking a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter on a 10-yard pass from Fontenot to Quinn, 17-yard run by Fontenot and the first of three field goals by kicker Jamie McGee.
The Bucs allowed Byrd back into the game when a muffed punt led to a short Byrd scoring drive just before halftime, with Dominic Haggerty scoring on a 12-yard run around right end to make the score 17-7 at the half.
Holy Cross 42, DeRidder 7
DERIDDER — Some nights, it isn’t meant to be.
The No. 22-seeded DeRidder Dragons faced that harsh reality on their home turf. Mistakes in the passing game cost them dearly as the No. 6-seeded Holy Cross Tigers rolled.
Many football games are often won or lost on a few plays. For DeRidder (7-5), five plays cost the Dragons an opportunity to hang with the Tigers (9-2).
Down after Holy Cross scored on the opening drive, DeRidder wide receiver JoeMike Baldwin got behind a defensive back on a third-and-7 and saw nothing but green ahead of him. But, the ball fell through his hands causing the Dragons to punt the next play.
Sandwiched in-between Todd Spriggins’ second and third touchdowns was the first of DeRidder quarterback’s D’Andre Bellamy’s three interceptions.
Holy Cross will host No. 14 LaGrange in a quarterfinal game next week.
LaGrange 41, St. Martinville 20
ST. MARTINVILLE — LaGrange’s first foray into the second round of the state football in more than a decade could not have started much worse.
But, oh what a finish with a flourish.
The Gators, though dominating much of the night after giving up a 72-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff, couldn’t shake St. Martinville until the fourth quarter when LaGrange poured on four touchdowns and rolled to a road victory over the Tigers.
The Gators, with a 1-2 punch in the backfield, ran for 414 yards, with Robert Leday picking up 187 with three touchdowns and Tyler Guillory adding 168 with a pair of touchdowns.
The Gators will have to travel next week to Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans to face Holy Cross, which advanced with a 42-7 victory over DeRidder.
Iowa 28, North Vermilion 17
IOWA — Iowa’s senior class came into a program without much in the way of a winning tradition. They won’t be leaving it that way.
The No. 26 Yellow Jackets overcame an early 10-point deficit to beat No. 10 North Vermillion and advance to the Class 3A quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Iowa will travel to face second-seeded Notre Dame, which beat St. Charles Catholic 27-7, on Friday.
Seniors accounted for many of Iowa’s big plays, making it all the sweeter for a group that had never won a playoff game before last week.
Jennings 20, Loranger 19
LORANGER — The Jennings Bulldogs defense stood tall all game and made the big plays when they needed.
Malik Williams’s interception in the end zone with 7 seconds remaining propelled the 13th seeded Bulldogs to a win over the fourth-seeded Loranger Wolves.
The Bulldogs looked to have sealed the win when they stopped the Wolves on the Bulldogs 30- yard line with 2:01 to play in the game. The Bulldogs however had to punt the ball to the Wolves with 35 seconds remaining. The Wolves converted two first downs and moved the ball until the turnover which ended the game.
The win advanced the Bulldogs to Class 3A quarterfinals, where they will travel to face fifth-seeded Livonia, which beat Port Allen 30-22.
Evangel Christian 41, Rosepine 14
SHREVEPORT — Second-seeded Evangel raced out to an early lead and never looked back.
Hoping to knock off the powerhouse from Shreveport, Rosepine was a big underdog.
The victory improves Evangel’s record to 10-2 on the season. Rosepine, which won its playoff opener over Lake Arthur 27-7, saw its season come to an end at 8-4.
Haynesville 38, Oberlin 0
HAYNESVILLE — Haynesville’s power running game proved too much for Oberlin to handle, as the second-seeded Tornados moved on with a shutout.
Haynesville rushed for 371 yards and held the Tigers to just 82 yards in total offense.
Titas Early scored on runs of 68 and 1 yards to lead the attack, as the Tornados held a 26-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. Davontae Critton also scored twice on runs of 21 and 4 yards for Haynesville (9-2), which lost to a Class 5A and 4A team this season.
Basile 25, Plain Dealing New Tech 14
Kendrick Ceaser ran for four touchdowns and 221 yards as Basile beat Plain Dealing New Tech.
Basile, which never trailed, took advantage of three turnovers and held PDNT to 234 total yards.
No. 13 seed Basile will host No. 5 Kentwood, a 34-17 winner over Metairie Park Country Day, in the quarterfinal round on Friday.
