BEAUMONT, Texas — Predicting what the Cowgirls will do in any given game has become an exercise in futility — but that turned out to be a good thing for McNeese State at Lamar Saturday afternoon.

A week after falling to last-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Cowgirls blasted first-place Lamar 65-46 at the Montagne Center.

“We’re a little bipolar, but we’re trying to work on it,” said senior point guard Caitlyn Baggett. “When we play team defense, it’s pretty much always a good outcome.”

The Cowgirls (13-11, 8-5 Southland) are now a game behind Lamar (17-7, 9-4), Sam Houston State and Oral Roberts in the race for first place.

“We kind of go as the twins go,” said coach Brooks Donald Williams. “The younger kids know by the twins’ demeanor what games are really important. Where we have to grow now is every game’s important the rest of the deal. Every single practice is important. We went out like it was business today.”

McNeese avenged a 57-53 home loss to the Cardinals on Jan. 19, and did so in a big way.””
