3 arrests made in brutal Lake Charles home invasion

A Lake Charles woman endured “senseless acts of brutality” when her Stanton Street home was broken into Nov. 14, Police Chief Don Dixon said Tuesday at a news conference.

Dixon announced the arrests of three men in relation to the home invasion: Sedric Lamar Green, 22, and Joshua Ray Bryant, 22, both of Lake Charles, and Jaylin Cortez Jack, 20, of Westlake.

The men entered the home, assaulted the woman and robbed her, Dixon said. In addition to armed robbery, Green and Bryant face kidnapping and sexual battery charges.

The men tied the woman’s hands and covered her head, then stole a shotgun, a handgun, a cellphone, an iPad and a computer as she knelt on the floor “scared and helpless,” Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said in a news release issued Tuesday.

It is not believed that the woman knew the men, but that the men entered the home looking for weapons, Dixon said. The woman, who attended Tuesday’s news conference, was seeing their mugshots for the first time, Dixon said.

“We don’t believe the victim was targeted; we believe the house was targeted, specifically,” Dixon said. “This was a planned deal. To go in and commit a robbery is one thing, but then a senseless brutality with a helpless victim, there’s no excuse. … Society’s not going to forgive you, law enforcement’s not going to forgive you, and hopefully a judge is not going to forgive you or a jury is not going to forgive you.”

Police received a phone call around 8 p.m. Nov. 14 that divulged the names of Green, Bryant and Jack, Kraus said.

Green was arrested first, at Motel 6 on U.S. 171, where he was staying with his girlfriend in room 148, Kraus said. Police contacted the hotel clerk, Antonio Curtis McGruder, “in an attempt to have Green and his girlfriend come out of the room peacefully,” Kraus said.

Instead, McGruder warned the couple that police had arrived, Kraus said. He was arrested for obstructing justice.

SWAT officers then removed Green and his girlfriend from the room, as well as a third person, Devan Kade Broussard, Kraus said. Green, a convicted felon, had a gun in the room, as did Broussard, he said. Broussard’s weapon was reported stolen on Oct. 6. Broussard was arrested for possession of a stolen weapon.

Bryant, who is Green’s cousin and is also known as “Doughboy,” was arrested at his home on Creole Street around 9 a.m. Nov. 15, Kraus said. Jack was arrested at his home on Pullman Street in Westlake around noon Monday.

“We called the press conference today to ensure the public that when something like this happens, we don’t sleep,” Dixon said. “I literally had to send my detectives home late Saturday night — they had worked 30-plus hours straight — to get some sleep. We will not tolerate this.”

Jack does not face the same number of charges as Green and Bryant, because he was a “late participant” in the crime, Dixon said. But, he said, the grand jury may see fit to add charges.

Dixon asked anyone who purchased items from Green, Bryant or Jack to turn them over to police. Dixon said he had the word of Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John DeRosier that anyone who turned the items over voluntarily wouldn’t be prosecuted. District attorney’s spokeswoman Holly Carter said that as long as that was the only involvement and the items were turned over voluntarily, there would be no prosecution.

Green and Bryant are on probation for other crimes, and Green is also wanted in South Carolina, Dixon said. Jack has previous arrests locally and in Houston.

“Something’s broken and needs to be fixed,” Dixon said. “People need to be held accountable for their actions. Period. They should never walk the streets again.”

Green was arrested in August 2012 for allegedly taking part in a string of robberies. Authorities said he helped break into a bar in Westlake, pry open an ATM and steal the money and helped cut the power and phone lines to a Sulphur pawn shop to burglarize the building.

Green was also reportedly the passenger in a high-speed police chase in February.

“It always amazes me when we have something like this, we’re always dealing with late teens or early 20s, they’re unemployed,” Dixon said. “Bad things are going to happen. You don’t go from A to Z like this without something going on in your life. It just doesn’t happen.”

Green, 2033 Sixth St., and Bryant, 2115 Creole St., Apt. B, were charged with armed robbery, armed robbery with a firearm, second-degree kidnapping and second-degree sexual battery. Bond was set at $1 million. Jack, 1020 Pullman St., Westlake, was charged with armed robbery. Bond was set at $600,000.
