Lake Charles man dies following major accidents on I-10 and I-210

From staff reports

Two wrecks, one of which resulted in a fatality, halted traffic on Interstate 10 and Interstate 210 Wednesday morning.

A six-vehicle pileup near the Nelson Road exit on 210 forced traffic to back up to the Broad St. exit, while a 28-year-old Lake Charles man was killed in a two-vehicle accident on I-10, city police said.

Steven Clophus, 2631 Pineview St., was killed when the 2004 Ford Escape he was driving collided with an 18-wheeler, said Deputy Chief Mark Kraus.

Kraus said Clophus changed lanes and hit the 18-wheeler, which had changed lanes because of congestion, causing Clophus’ car to become wedged beneath the trailer of the 18-wheeler.

Neither the driver of the 18-wheeler, Hector Nunez, nor his passenger, David Nunez, both of Houston, received any injuries from the wreck.

Hector Nuner submitted to an alcohol test although alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, Kraus said. No citations were issued, Kraus said.

Traffic congestion is believed to also be a cause in the Interstate 210 pileup.

Kraus said five vehicles were stopped in traffic when a sixth vehicle hit the vehicle in front of it, causing a chain reaction.

Nine people were taken to area hospitals although none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, Kraus said. Three 18-wheelers were involved in the crash, Kraus said.
