Locals say that the downtown Leesville has changed a lot over the years. The bars that once dotted the street during the town’s World War II and Vietnam era are long gone. The nightspots have been replaced by storefronts, a cafe, an art gallery, banks and offices. See the full story in Sunday’s American Press (August 29, 2010)

Riders from Lake Charles, New Orleans and Houston hosted a flatlanders’ jam at the Pinderosa Park in Westlake on August 22, 2010. Flatland is a freestyle bike riding style in which the rider performs tricks, jumps, spins and stands without placing a foot on the ground. This local jam was held in honor of a Westlake native, Kevin Lewis, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

By Donna Price, American Press
Istre Cemetery, on Swift Road off La. 92 in Mermentau Cove, Louisiana was founded in 1886. It is home to three burial structures known as grave houses — from Acadian burial customs of a bygone era. The houses look a lot like real houses in miniature. They cover traditional in-ground burials. At one time there were 40 of these little cypress wood houses in Istre Cemetery, and hundreds more were scattered across Acadia, Evangeline and Vermilion parishes. Now only three of those original ones remain. Read more about the grave houses at Istre Cemetery in the Sunday, Aug. 15 edition of the American Press.
