Anglers may be facing offshore rains today, the first day of the Southwest Louisiana Fishing Club’s 72nd Annual Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
“Friday, fishers will probably see the best chance of rain offshore, showers and thunderstorms, across the northern Gulf, about 60 miles out,” said Montra Lockwood, a meteorologist at the local National Weather Service office. “Saturday, the thunderstorms will dissipate and become more isolated on into Sunday.”
Lockwood recommended caution with offshore thunderstorms.
“Lightning over water can be very dangerous,” Lockwood said. “Fishers will also want stay hydrated when the sun is out. Temperatures over the water will be in the 90s in the afternoon and in the low 80s at night.”
According to Lockwood, winds will be mostly out of the south at about 10 knots or less.
“It may be 15 knots by Sunday,” Lookwood said. “Seas should also be two feet or less. They may increase to four feet near the Texas coast with the increasing wind surf.”
The rodeo, which runs today through Sunday, features more than $2,000 in cash and prizes. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network for Southwest Louisiana.
The tournament weigh station will be at the clubhouse at LaFleur Park in Lake Charles. Weigh-in will be 3-7 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday. Scuba division weigh-in ends at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets can be purchased at Ship to Shore, Cormie’s Grocery, Cajun Fast Mart, Lake Charles Tackle, West Marine, True Blue Watersports and Gulf Coast Tackle.
