Get it or go with it?

Today we had a rare weather event. We got freezing rain and sleet.
Since we live in Fort Worth, Texas, with millions of others who don’t know how to drive in freezing rain and sleet, our weather event resulted in a blessed day off from work and school.
When we got up this morning, we immediately took advantage of our circumstances. Jim went out to the garage and got us a lid off of a large plastic tub.
We then dug through all our drawers until we found the appropriate winter gear. Admittedly, we didn’t have everything we needed for our toddler, so he had to wear socks for gloves. Hopefully this will not result in emotional scaring later in life.
After we layered to the point we could hardly move, we set out with our plastic tub lid for the icy hill on our street.
Our son Kai, didn’t have a clue what was going on. It didn’t make sense, but he trusted us. He held my hand as we slowly climbed the hill. He let me put him on the plastic lid, feet out front. He sat there, all cute and innocent and I gave him a big shove.
I think he was horrified at first as he slid toward his daddy. He had little to no control over his circumstances. The wind blew his hair. He slid sideways, then straight again. All the while, his daddy had in him view and close proximity. He then landed safely in his dad’s arms at the bottom of the street when his ride was over.
“Do it again! Do it again!”
I guess Kai went down the hill a couple dozen times. It was the best day ever for the three of us.
On Sunday, I heard a sermon about Nicodemus from John 3. I was reminded of it today. Nicodemus is confused when Jesus tells him he must be born a second time. It doesn’t make sense to him. Indeed, there is so much that doesn’t make sense spiritually – not just to Nicodemus, but to all of us. I guess, though, it isn’t really about “getting it.” It’s more about going with it. We just have to trust in our Lord.
After all, God is with us always and his arms are outstretched as we head his way – sometimes plummeting out of control with a smile on our face.
