A DeRidder man was killed Tuesday night in a single-vehicle accident.

Richard C. West, 45, died when the truck he was driving rolled over several times and struck a large pine tree around 9:40 p.m.

According to State Police Troop D, West was traveling west at a high rate of speed on Pleasant Hill Road, about a 1.4 miles west of U.S. 171 when the road surface changed from asphalt to packed gravel. West’s vehicle ran off the right side of the road. West overcorrected, causing the pickup truck to run off the left side of the road and through a ditch. The vehicle then rolled several times before striking the pine tree on the passenger side of the vehicle.

West, who was not wearing a seatbelt, received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

A toxicology sample was obtained from West and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
