SPECIAL TO THE AMERICAN PRESS
“Preparing Today for Tomorrow,” a collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by Alicia Johnson, will open with a reception 6-8 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Black Heritage Gallery.
Born and raised in Opelousas, Johnson started drawing at the age of 4 and has been in love with art ever since. She graduated from Opelousas High School where her mentor, Joseph Sias, encouraged her to go to college and pursue a degree in art.
Johnson’s subject matter is of close family and friends. Her work tells the story of what family and friends do together — fun times, conversations and habits. She tries to draw viewers into scenes with the characters through the direction of gaze, a friend’s expression, a person’s actions and body language.
She also tries to leave a cross or something biblical in each piece to show she is thankful for her talent.
Johnson is currently a graduating senior majoring in art/art education at McNeese.
The gallery is located on the second floor of Central School Arts & Humanities Center, 809 Kirby St. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.
