OBERLIN — Improvements to Reeves High School could be under way this spring after voters approved a 20-year, $4 million bond issue Saturday.

“Accomplishing this endeavor proves that the Reeves community values education for our children,”  school superintendent Michael Doucet said Monday.

The next step will be to meet with the architect and school administrators to review plans for the proposed project before final sale of the bonds, he said.

“By the time we finalize all the plans and sell the bonds, we are probably looking at three months before we see any construction,” Doucet said.

The project will include drainage improvements, increasing the school’s electrical capacity and addressing safety concerns of the campus.

The campus is currently a split campus with several entrances.

School officials would like to have one entrance to track who is coming and going, Doucet said.

A proposed $1 million drainage improvement will address flood concerns and other problems caused by the school being located in a low area, he said.

All Allen Parish schools, with the exception of Reeves High School, have undergone major expansions and renovations in recent years with all projects funded by bond issues approved by voters.

In other matters, Doucet said payroll checks from the Coushatta Tribe supplement and sales tax supplement were issued on Friday.

The School Board approved the Finance Committee’s recommendation last month to use local sales tax revenues and gaming computer funds to fund the stipends for its 689 employees.

As approved, degreed personnel – including classroom teachers and administrators – were to receive a $2,000 one-time supplement with . all other employees, including support personnel, receiving $1,100.

Doucet also announced that mid-term exams will be given Dec. 15-18 with the Christmas break beginning after lunch on Dec. 19. Students will return to school on Jan. 5.

Schools in Kinder will be closed this Friday as the Kinder High School football team advances to the Class 2A state championship game in New Orleans. Game time is 8 p.m.

This is the second consecutive year the team has gone to the Superdome. Last year Kinder won the state title beating Many in the championship game. Once again the opponent will be Many.(MGNonline)
