Looking for a way to stay in shape, Steve Vincent took up running.

Looking for a way to also support a good cause, he began running in military marathons.

An Army veteran, he started with an Army marathon, then recruited his two brothers and his father to join him in a Wounded Warrior half-marathon and 10K in Dallas in June.

The Vincent brothers are all Army veterans and police officers. Keith is the chief of police in Iowa, and Steve and Terrell are state troopers. Their father, Jimmy Vincent, is a former police officer.

“(Steven’s) the one that said, ‘Y’all need to come run,’ ” Keith said. “We decided we needed to stay healthier so we started doing some running and getting ready for it and then we went.”

A few thousand runners turned out for the event, which benefited the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit group that aids wounded veterans and their families.

“Coming from a family of veterans, running for the ones that didn’t make it home, or are disabled is a good cause to run for,” Steve said. “That’s why we chose that event.

“It was a nice run, and then to do it with my family made it that much better.”

Among the runners were civilians, military members and veterans, Keith said.

While Steve ran the half-marathon, the others opted to participate in the 10K.

“For me it was just being able to get through it and keeping up with my dad,” Keith said. “He’s in pretty good shape for his age.”

Steve said his goal is to also run Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps marathons.

He said staying in shape is his motivating factor, but that a sense of accomplishment also comes with running for a good cause.

Keith said the rest of the family is also looking at other events, but as a family, they plan to make the Wounded Warrior event annually.

“We’re all Army veterans and basically running to support the troops and help out,” Steve said.””
