A police standoff at the Valero gas station on Belden Street in Lake Charles ended peacefully.
At 2:40 p.m., city police received a call about a robbery. Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said it took less than a minute for a nearby patrol officer to reach the scene.
When the patrol officer looked through the gas station window, he noticed the suspect behaving strangely in the store, Kraus said.
Kraus also said that in the gas station with the suspect was another person and the store clerk.
“The store clerk saw the patrol officer and kind of waved him off,” Kraus said. “The officer sees another person in there so now we’ve substantiated the call that there was an armed robbery in progress and that non verbal communication provided by the clerk also confirmed all of this. Within minutes, we had 10 or 15 cop cars here. We set up a perimeter and notified our SWAT and hostage negotiators.”
Kraus said with all of the law enforcement on the scene, it didn’t take long for the situation to come to a peaceful resolution.
“We waited for about 20 minutes or so and both the store clerk and an unidentified person came out of the store,” Kraus said. “We engaged and detained them and at this point, the matter is still under investigation.”
Kraus added that the state police were instrumental in the process by closing the exit and on-ramps to Interstate 10 as police responded to the call.
