SULPHUR — After reeling off eight straight wins to start the season, the St. Louis Saints got a taste of their own medicine Tuesday night, as the Sulphur Tors feasted on a host of Saints mistakes in their 6-5 extra-inning win.

St. Louis (8-1) committed six errors, including a bad throw to home on the final play of the game. Sulphur (7-3) made three of their own, but held the Saints scoreless over the final five innings.

The Tors scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth without the ball leaving the infield. Kale Breaux and Brooks Morse led off the inning with consecutive bunt singles and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Louviere. Ethan Hyatt was intentionally walked to load the bases, then Jacob Sharp hit a ground ball to second. The throw home got past the catcher and rolled to the backstop allowing Breaux to score the winning run.

Cole Lavergne (2-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win and had two singles at the plate.

“We were a little sloppy early on, but in about the third inning we started playing pretty good,” said Tors head coach Jason Trahan. “Every guy that came in relief threw strikes and kept us in the game. We kept plugging and plugging and finally got it to go our way.”

Saints head coach Chad Hebert said the Tors did to his team what they have been doing to others.

“They beat us at our own game,” Hebert said. “We bunt, we run the bases. They did a better job in the field, they did a better job with small ball, they did a better job with two-strike hitting. Sulphur outplayed us. We didn’t do anything to help ourselves, but Sulphur won the game.

“They did a terrific job. They put the pressure on us at the end it paid off. What they did to us tonight, we have done to everybody us. We haven’t made the mistakes. Tonight, we made them.”

Saints pitchers Brant McNease and Dylan Greenman (1-1) held the Tors to five hits over the first seven innings. Of the Tors first five runs, three of the scorers reached on errors and three scored on errors.

Breaux led the Tors with an RBI, two runs scored and two scoreless innings on the mound.

Haden Hernandez had two hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored for the Saints. Jacob Eccles had two hits and drove in a run for the Saints.
