WELSH — A barricade situation involving an armed man ended peacefully Saturday after a nearly three-hour standoff with police.

The name of the man is being withheld as charges are pending, Police Chief Marcus Crochet said.

The incident began at about 3 p.m. Saturday when Welsh police responded to reports of shots being fired in the 500 block of North Adams Street, Crochet said.

“Upon our officers arriving the subject fired several rounds and went back into the house,” Crochet said. “Officers tried to make contact, but he failed to answer the door.”

Welsh police and Jeff Davis Parish sheriff’s officials secured the scene, closing off a major part of the streets around North Adams Street. Some nearby residents were asked to move for their safety, Crochet said.

The incident ended at about 6:15 p.m. when a negotiator with the Lake Charles police SWAT team made contact with the man via cellphone and was able to talk him into surrendering, Crochet said.

No one else was inside the residence, and there were no injuries reported.

Power to the house was turned off during the incident.
