For one night only, the Grammy-nominated country duo Thompson Square will take the stage of the coliseum at the Lake Charles Civic Center as a part of Contraband Days. Their 9 p.m. concert May 9 will be their first visit to Lake Charles.
After performing overseas in Australia, Guam, Japan and Hawaii for the U.S. Navy, the husband-and-wife duo is now beginning their “Just Feels Good” tour, which will continue through August. Though they have toured with other musicians such as Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum and Luke Bryan, this is their first tour as headliners.
“The military tour was one of our favorite things,” Keifer Thompson said. “You know, those people are there missing their families, and homes. It’s a level of appreciation that is off the chart. You really feel the love and the appreciation when you’re on a American base in a foreign country.”
His wife, Shawna, agrees.
“It’s been amazing. It’s something that we always wanted to do, getting out and playing our own shows, getting all hot and sweaty and having fun with the crowd,” she said.
The couple have been performing since they met 18 years ago, and touring for most of their lives. Touring for Thompson Square has evolved from honky-tonks and bars to venues throughout the world. As for performing together, it has been a major foundation for their relationship.
“It just works for us,” Keifer said. “We tried doing individual things, but it’s been great seeing her dreams come true and having our dream come true. We’ve grown a lot since we started, and it’s been great doing this with my friend.”
“I couldn’t imagine being on stage and not seeing Keifer there,” Shawna said. “It’s just who Thompson Square is.”
Their inspirations are drawn from everyday events. As songwriters their process varies per song.
“We get inspired by a lot,” Keifer said. “Living is what inspires song to be written. The more you live, your songwriting changes. It could be a story from Facebook or things happening in your everyday life.”
“Our musical influences are all over the map. We both love traditional country music and Keifer is a massive (Bruce) Springsteen fan,” Shawna said.
After 15 years of marriage their work is something that always brings them together.
“I think the music is a big part of it because we can have a big argument about something stupid, and we’ll forget about it by the end of the show. It’s good therapy.”
The concert is a part of Contraband Days and is a members only event. Memberships start at $15 on the Contraband Days website and are available the day of the event.
