Are you smarter than Scooter? Astute as Alex? A genius like Gazzolo?

Here is your chance to prove you're smarter than a sports writer.

The American Press is hosting a men's college basketball tournament bracket challenge.

Join our private group, fill out a bracket and score the most points to take home a Kindle Fire HD. In addition to competing against other American Press readers, select members of our sports staff will be entered into the contest.

The reader with the most points following the championship game will be declared the winner and receive a Kindle Fire HD. In the event of a tie, a drawing will be held at the American Press office to choose the winner.

Also, the top-10 readers who score more points than sports editor Scooter Hobbs will get a special T-shirt.

If you are interested in participating you must have a account, which is free.

To sign up, go to and click the join-a-group button.

The ID number for our group is 44997 and the password is 'beat the sports guys.'

The deadline for entry is about five minutes before the first game tips off on Thursday. If you have any questions, email online editor Michael Cooper at

Basketball Bracket Battle Primer

• The tournament is a six-round, single-elimination event that includes the top 64 men's college basketball teams in the nation. There is play-in round that features the bottom eight teams but it is not included in the bracket. The bracket is broken up into four regions with 16 teams in each region. Teams are assigned positions on the bracket according to ranking.

• The tournament field will be set on Sunday, March 17. Fill out your bracket at according to who you think will win each game, all the way to the title match. You score point(s) for each correct choice. We are using a progressive scoring system for this event so the number of points you get for a correct guess goes us each round. For tie-breaking purposes, you must also pick the final score of the championship game.

• The person with the most total points following the championship game will be declared the winner and receive a Kindle Fire HD. The top-10 readers who beat sports editor Scooter Hobbs will get a special T-shirt.
