An argument between two former LSU football players ended in a shooting in Sulphur late Friday night, authorities said.

Both men are Southwest Louisiana natives, who were prep football stars in the area.

Sulphur High graduate Tahj Jones, 24, was shot in the abdomen with a handgun by Washington-Marion graduate Brandon Winey, 36, 2828 Medora St., Jason Gully, Sulphur Police Department spokesman, said in a news release.

Jones was first brought to a local hospital, then transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center, Gully said. Jones is listed in serious condition after undergoing surgery, Charla Ducote, hospital spokeswoman, said.

Winey fled the scene, but was arrested at his home by Lake Charles police officers without incident, Gully said. Judge David Ritchie set his bond at $1 million.

Sulphur police were called to Town and Country Apartments, at 1800 S. Beglis Pkwy., at 11:42 Friday night, Gully said.

Shortly after Jones showed up unannounced at the apartments to visit a female friend, Winey also showed up to visit the female, Gully said. A verbal argument became physical and Winey shot Jones, Gully said.

The woman brought Jones to the hospital, Gully said

Jones finished at LSU in the fall and participated in LSU's recent pro day.

Winey played at LSU from 1997 to 2000 before being taken in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL draft. He played a season with the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants.
